You may have heard about the large numbers of people who are being treated for depression these days. People suffering from this disorder feel empty and unworthy. They have lost their zest for life and anything they attempt is a tremendous effort. These feelings lead them to feel cut off from other people and as a result, they tend to isolate themselves from the people in their lives.

If these health issues are a symptom of the problem of people not feeling connected to each other, then maybe we should make a point of doing things that will help to re-establish those all-important connections.

There are many reasons that depression occurs. If you or someone you love needs help, talk you a doctor or counselor you trust. The suggestions below are things you can do on your own, before despair reaching a life threatening point. However, they shouldn't substitute a doctor's care.

Find a Club

There are any number of social and hobby clubs around and it shouldn't be too difficult for you to find one that you are interested in joining. No matter what your interest or level of ability, you can find people in your area that share at least some of the same interests you have.

Play a Sport

Since your goal here is to get and feel connected to other people, consider joining a sports team as opposed to going to the gym and working out on your own. It may be tempting to sign up for an exercise class, but you may find that the participants come to class, follow the movements, and leave without having much interaction with each other.

When you sign up to be part of a hockey, soccer, or basketball team, you will need to interact with the other players on the team to learn how to work together to perform well. All of you will need to get to know each other's strengths and weaknesses as players to achieve your goal of winning more often than you lose. You will have no choice but to be an active participant in the process. Basketball is ideal since it can be played indoors or out, and affordable basketball hoops can be easily installed almost anywhere.

Become a Volunteer

One way to get your mind off of your own concerns is to find a worthy cause and volunteer your time to help out. Many organizations can use some help from time to time, and you can choose to volunteer for a short time or make a long-term commitment. It all depends on the amount of time you have available and how much of a commitment you are willing and able to make.

Check online or look in your local phone book to get ideas about the kinds of associations and organizations in your community and contact each one you are interested in to find out about opportunities for volunteers. Seniors homes, schools, and hospitals are good choices when you are looking for somewhere you can make a difference.

Join a Church

When you are at a point in your life when you want to feel connected to something outside of yourself, you may want to start going to church. These are not only places where people join together to worship; there is also a real sense of community that goes along with being a member.
